Abeer Aref

Asja Keeman

Abeer and Asja asked themselves, “Can we see home as a container?”

For both artists, home is not only defined as a space for physical living: it has several other associations that are emotionally, biologically, culturally, and socially determined.

People have tremendous adaptability, and many of us - voluntarily or involuntarily - seek out new locations. But despite all this, the cadence of speech, the trusted sounds, the flavors of comfort, the habits, and our cultural values remain seeped into the depth of our being.

Home is a container for us to fill and carry with us.

For this project Abeer and Asja worked in close correspondence with one another while reflecting on their childhood. Asja utilized the technique of the cutout to represent the unknown and her urge to try and fill gaps in the stories Abeer shared with her, but also her own fading memories and attachments to the home of her childhood. Meanwhile, Abeer used fond memories of her mother as an inspiration to approach the idea of home.
